"My ... song to Los Angeles and to the art of yearning and the struggle we feel as we search for love." - Jose Rivera
"(José) Rivera’s style, an homage to the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, enriches his subject — the quirkiness of time, particularly for those in love. And he’s generally adept at blending the earthy with the ethereal."
-Variety
Cloud Tectonics, by theater prominent José Rivera (Obie Award Winner, Goya Award Winner, Oscar Nominee -The Motorcycle Diaries), takes us away from daily life into a world of magic, whimsy, and infinite love. A place where time stops to guide us into a space of magic and possibilities... just because.
It is the quintessential Angeleno play; the heavy rain desperately needed comes but causes Fairfax Ave. to flood, the shut down of LAX, and bodies to go down the LA river. If you know LA distances then you can gauge the magnitude of this event. Against this catastrophe, two souls find the most coveted award and the rarest form of natural events: TRUE LOVE.
I want to give the audience an immersive and interactive experience that takes them into a world where anything can happen for an hour. We need it to lift us and fill us with hope for the goodness of the human spirit. The experience will lean into the art of entertainment.
I want to do this play in honor of the time-consuming search for love and self, the joy of finding it, and because now more than ever we need the magic of love. My desire is that everyone is entertained and transported to infinite hope.
I want the message of the play to be made as personal as each person needs it to be. I wish to gift the audience with an escape, 60 minutes to stop time, fall in love, and dream.
After two years inside our homes, it is time to gather and let a dreamy experience unify and heal us.
Cloud Tectonics will be presented in Los Angeles in the summer of 2023.
